Ingredient of the Month: Oranges
The most famous fruit in the world may also be the most healthy!
Oranges, our May ingredient of the month, are actually a hybrid fruit descended from a pomelo and a mandarin. Where you might prefer the thick-skinned Naval oranges stacked in the produce section each winter, and your bestie might be a fan of the thin-skinned Valencia's available in the summer we can all agree that the sweet, bright flavor is a welcome addition to any day.
What you might not know is just how much good that one fruit is doing for you!
Oranges have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and blood clot inhibiting properties, as well as strong antioxidant effects due to the flavonoids it contains (over 60) and its more than 150 different phytonutrients. Recent studies have even found that the herperidin molecule, a flavanone in oranges, has been shown to lower high blood pressure, cholesterol, and to have anti-inflammatory properties. Unfortunately for most orange eaters, this molecule is found mostly in peel and inner white pulp(pith) of the orange.
For you lucky Fire Cider drinkers the pith and peel are all part of our recipe! Whole oranges, and well as the other 9 core ingredients are steeped whole in our raw ACV to draw out all of the vital, beneficial compounds!
